Snofest in Peterborough: Family Day Weekend Winter Fun

February 11, 20263 min read

If you’re looking for something fun to do over the Family Day long weekend, Snofest is one of Peterborough’s favorite winter traditions. This annual celebration brings the community together with free, family-friendly activities ranging from skating and crafts to pancake breakfasts, wildlife encounters, and hands-on activities for kids.

Events take place at several locations across the city, making it easy to drop in to one activity or plan a full weekend of winter fun.

Snofest Schedule & Highlights

Friday: Kickoff with Swimming and Dinosaurs

Snofest begins Friday evening with a free family fun swim at the Peterborough Sport and Wellness Centre. Alongside the swim, families can enjoy a Dinosaur Pop-Up featuring crafts and activities presented with the Peterborough Museum and Archives.

This is a great low-key way to start the weekend—especially for families with younger kids.

Saturday: Downtown Festivities, Crafts, and Activities

Snofest Square & Winter Village
Downtown Peterborough comes alive at Quaker Foods City Square with cozy fire pits, seating areas, and activities throughout the afternoon. Programming includes:

  • Snow yoga (“Snoga”)

  • A children’s chorus performance

  • Salsa dancing

  • Free outdoor skating

The event is run in partnership with the Peterborough DBIA and offers a lively, welcoming atmosphere in the heart of the city.

Story Time and Crafts
Earlier in the day, the Peterborough Public Library hosts a special Snofest story time and winter-themed crafts—perfect for younger children and families.

More Dinosaur Fun
The Dinosaur Pop-Up returns in the evening at the Sport and Wellness Centre, with crafts, activities, and fun photo opportunities.

Sunday: Pancakes, Art, and Family Activities

Mayor’s Pancake Breakfast
A longtime favorite, the Snofest Pancake Breakfast invites residents to enjoy warm pancakes along with coffee, tea, or hot chocolate at the Sport and Wellness Centre.

Family Sunday at the Art Gallery of Peterborough
Families can head to the Art Gallery of Peterborough for a scavenger hunt and creative collage activity, along with the chance to explore current exhibitions.

All Weekend: Meet the Otters

At Riverview Park and Zoo, special enrichment sessions give visitors a chance to meet the otters and learn about their winter care. These sessions take place on Saturday, Sunday, and Monday.

This is always a hit with kids—and a great excuse for a winter walk through the zoo.

Monday (Family Day): Skating and Sports

Free Public Skate & Crafts
The Miskin Law Community Complex hosts a free public skate along with drop-in winter crafts, making it an ideal Family Day outing.

Drop-In Sports
At the Sport and Wellness Centre, visitors can try activities like pickleball, basketball, and badminton during free “Try It” sessions throughout the day.

Why Snofest is Worth Visiting

Snofest is a great reminder that winter in Peterborough can be fun, social, and full of activity. With events spread across the city and something for every age group, it’s easy to build your own itinerary—whether that’s skating downtown, exploring the zoo, or enjoying pancakes with friends and family.

Best of all, all Snofest events are free to attend, making it one of the most accessible winter festivals in the region
